The NCCR Climate carries out basic research and cooperates with partners from economic and administrative bodies to put newly acquired knowledge into practice. In the NCCR's first four-year phase a forecasting model, among other things, was developed that forecasts the climate for a period of six months. It is currently being used by MeteoSwiss and will eventually be used by Swiss Re as well. Furthermore, another new tool that was developed and is currently in use are probability forecasts that serve to improve the warning of extreme events. In the second phase, the NCCR Climate and Swiss Re are working, among other things, on risk forecasting. They are studying the risks from winter storms and tropical cyclones, which are linked to global warming.
